He became what we are that he might make us what he is.
St. Athanasius
God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man.
C.S. Lewis
Incarnation. God living among us. God living with us. God living in us. God living through us.
As a community, an ekklesia, we see incarnation as the beginning of our journey. In John 1, the writer states,
1 In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God.
2 The Word was with God in the beginning.
3 Everything came into being through the Word,
and without the Word
nothing came into being.
What came into being
4 through the Word was life,
and the life was the light for all people.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.
and later on:
14The Word became flesh
and made his home among us.
We have seen his glory,
glory like that of a father’s only son,
full of grace and truth.
As part of our calling as a community, we are called to be living reminder, a priesthood, of God and his love to our family, neighbors, community and world. For all of us this may look different. However, the common thread is grace. Incarnation is the ultimate act of grace. And that’s why we do what we do: to be agents of grace in a graceless society. To join God in the restoration and reconciliation of the world.
